Dear Parents,
In social studies, students will be starting our unit on Westward Expansion. It is a favorite of students in past years! Students will be taking on the roles of pioneers in a class simulation that is similar to the Oregon Trail game that we played as kids. In science, I am impressed at how quickly the students picked up on coding the Spheros for the body systems tours. Students will be sharing their tours this week. We will also look more closely at nutrient systems, including our very own digestive system, at the end of the week. In reading, students are finishing up their book club text. We will be looking at how the story may change if told through the perspectives of different characters. In math, we are continuing our work with fractions. We’ll be reviewing addition/subtraction of fractions and begin our exploration of multiplying fractions. Reading/Math Homework for This Week 1) Read 15-20 minutes each evening. Your child may bring his/her book club text home. Just make sure your child returns it daily. 2) Study Wordly Wise Words: The test on Lesson 9 words will be on Friday, March 9. 3) Study Spelling Words-The test will be on Friday, March 9 due to our busy schedule this Friday. 4) Mighty Mathematicians Bag-Due Friday, March 2. Please remind your child to return all materials in the bag and complete a math response journal to show his/her thinking. If you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to contact me. In social studies, students will be learning about our democratic government. Ask them about the branches of government and how a bill becomes a law by the end of the week. In science, we are finishing our body systems research. Students will be using Spheros to create a “body systems tour.” Looking Ahead: -February 23: Now a student day! -February 26: Progress Reports sent home and Book Fair begins. -February 28: Schiele Museum Field Trip form and money due, Fundraiser Turn-In date -March 2: Growth and Development Lesson—Please return these slips as soon as possible. Mrs. Melissa Park Reading/Math Homework for This Week, due on Friday, February 23.
1) Read 15-20 minutes each evening. Your child may bring his/her book club text home. Just make sure your child returns it daily. 2) Study Wordly Wise Words: The test on Lesson 8 words will be on Friday, February 23. 3) Study Spelling Words-The test will be on Friday, February 23. 4) Math Homework-Due Friday, February 23. For this week only, I am not sending home the Mighty Mathematicians homework bags. We need help with adding and subtracting fractions! We continue to practice the skill, but the students are still getting confused in the process. I’m sending home a sheet of practice problems. I’m also sending copies of the “cheat sheets” we are using in class to help students walk through the steps of solving fraction problems. Please sit with your child as they do this homework. If you would like additional sheets to help them practice at home, just jot me a note in your child’s planner or email me. I will continue to work on these skills in class. We will have an assessment on adding/subtracting fractions and simplifying fractions on Friday, February 23. If you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to contact me. You may jot a note in your child’s planner (just remind your child to show me!), call (704-736-1504), or send an email ([email protected]). Have an amazing week! Mrs. Melissa Park Dear Parents,
I was so proud of the students and their conversations about their Cougar Family Book Club texts on Friday. Thank you for participating in this reading as a family. I hope you received benefits from it as well! If you are interested in borrowing one of the other books, just have your child ask me for the title you’d like! In reading, we will look more closely at finding the main idea of a passage and begin our new book clubs. In math, we’ll continue our review of whole number operations and fraction concepts. I’ve created some “cheat sheets” for simplifying and adding/subtracting fractions. Once I get feedback from the students on the cheat sheets, I’ll make copies for you to use at home also. Homework for This Week, due on Friday, February 16. 1) Read 15-20 minutes each evening. Your child may bring his/her book club text home. Just make sure your child returns it daily. 2) Study Wordly Wise Words: The test on Lesson 8 words will be on Friday, February 23. 3) Study Spelling Words-The test will be on Friday, February 16. 4) Mighty Mathematicians Homework Bags-Due Friday, February 16. Remember students should only work 15-20 minutes each evening on math homework. It is important to me that students have time to spend with their families and just to be kids. If you have assignments, particularly in the Versa Tiles books, that your child does not finish after this amount of time, please just write a note and sign it on the math journal response. If you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to contact me. You may jot a note in your child’s planner (just remind your child to show me!), call (704-736-1504), or send an email ([email protected]). Have an amazing week! Mrs. Melissa Park Dear Parents,
In social studies, students will be learning more about the battles of the American Revolution. They will visit the battlefields of Lexington and Concord through virtual reality! In science, we will begin our study of unicellular and multicellular organisms. We’ll begin our body system research at the end of the week. Please take time to enjoy your child’s Ecosystems Virtual Reality project. You can find it on our class webpage under Classroom Links-Virtual Reality. See the center column for their projects. You do not need a VR headset to view them. Looking Ahead: -February 14: Valentine’s Day Celebration- Your child may bring in Valentine cards and small treats (candy, party favors, pencils, etc.) to pass out to the class on Wednesday, February 14. If your child chooses to bring cards/treats, please make sure that they bring one for each member of the class. I have included the names below. We have no food allergies in our room. -February 15: Jump Rope Club performance at 6pm-Come see several of your classmates perform! -February 23: Now a student day! -February 26: Progress Reports sent home and Book Fair begins. -February 28: Schiele Museum Field Trip form and money due, Fundraiser Turn-In date -March 2: Growth and Development Lesson—There is an attached letter to this newsletter with more information.
