Hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving holiday with their families! In our homeroom class, we’ll be making observations on the interdependence of abiotic factors and biotic factors in our terrariums and aquariums. Thanks to all families who have sent in supplies for our ecosystems project and those who have volunteered as students excitedly created their bottle ecosystems! The students are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our “critters” this week. In social studies, students are continuing their work on learning about life in the Thirteen Colonies. We will also be creating a PCIS video tour for our Tanzanian pen pals.
We will have a quiz on the ecosystems vocabulary covered so far during the middle of next week. I’ll send the exact date after I’ve adjusted plans based on how long it takes to add our “critters” to our ecosystems this week. J Encourage your child to bring their science notebooks home each evening. Just remind him/her to return it each day! Students should be familiar with ecosystem, abiotic factor, biotic factor, consumer, producer, decomposer, scavenger, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, food chain.
Please continue to have your child review his/her weather notes in the science notebook as well. We will review a question from our Science LOT each morning. We’ll be completing a quiz at the end of our review to ensure that students have mastered the weather concepts. It will be a good idea to keep those concepts fresh in their minds.
Upcoming Events:
-Colonial Christmas: Looking ahead, on December 19, we will be having our holiday party in the afternoon. I would like to make it a day of fun and learning. I’m looking into activities for a Colonial Christmas to help students experience history in the classroom. It would be very helpful to have extra adult hands in the classroom that day. If you are able to send materials for the Colonial Christmas and holiday party, that would be helpful as well. Please complete and return the slip below by Friday, November 30. This will help me in planning for the special day.
-Progress Reports: These will go home on Monday, December 3.
-Candy Cane Sales: PCIS will be having their annual Candy Cane sale from December 10-14 to raise money for Relay for Life.
-McDonalds Night: Come support PCIS on December 11 at the Boger City location! Fifth grade teachers will be at this event.
-No School: Our winter holiday break will be from December 20-January 1.
As always, if you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected] or 704-736-1504. Keep checking our class website at www.mrsparkfifthgrade.weebly.com. Have an amazing week!
