We've had so much fun exploring science in our class. Check out our images below! Dear Parents,
In reading, we will continue learning about using context clues to determine the meaning of an unknown word. In math, we will begin looking at place value of decimals. We will also continue our work with fractions this week. Students will review addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of fractions. They will be applying their skills to make adjustments in two cookie recipes. I’d like to put their math into action by using their adjusted recipes to bake the cookies next week. If you are able to help a small group of students prepare their cookie dough, please note it on the slip below. I will see which morning we will have the most assistance and schedule the baking for that day. J I have also created TenMarks accounts for all the students. Students have access to the program at home as well. Simply go to tenmarks.com and use the username and password in the planner. TenMarks offers videos, hints, and guided lessons to practice math concepts. The language and level of questioning used in TenMarks is similar to that of the EOGs. If you are looking for something extra to help your child in math, this will definitely help! Username: Password: We will have class store right before Spring Break. Any items you may donate for our class store would be greatly appreciated. J Reading/Math Homework for This Week 1) Read 15-20 minutes each evening. Your child may bring his/her book club text home. Just make sure your child returns it daily. 2) Study Wordly Wise Words: The test on Lesson 10 words will be on Friday, March 23. 3) Study Spelling Words-The test will be on Friday, March 23. 4) Adjust a Recipe Math Homework-Due Friday, March 23. Have your child choose a recipe. It may be a family favorite, one from the internet, or one on the back of a box or bag of food in your pantry. Your child should put the recipe at the top of the paper. Then have your child choose how they want to adjust the recipe. Your child may decide to make half of the recipe, make the recipe to serve eight people, double the recipe, etc. Label how your child is adjusting the recipe. Beneath, have your child use his/her fraction knowledge to adjust the recipe. I’ve included a sample below. I plan to hang these recipes on our hallway bulletin board. I want all PCIS fifth graders to see that we truly do use the math we are learning in class in daily life! If you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to contact me. You may jot a note in your child’s planner (just remind your child to show me!), call (704-736-1504), or send an email ([email protected]). Have an amazing week! Mrs. Melissa Park Dear Parents,
In science, students will conduct an experiment to show how our nervous system works. We will also start our unit on genetics. In social studies, students will be challenged with their first decisions on the Oregon Trail. Reminders: -Body System Notes: Start studying! We will have a test on unicellular/multicellular organisms, cells/tissues/organs/systems, and how body systems work together. Students will also be tested on the genetics unit material we are covering this week. Our paper and pencil test will be on Tuesday, March 27. We will take the computer based science LOT on the morning of Wednesday, March 28. Encourage your child to bring his/her science notebook home every evening to start rereading over the notes. -Class Store: Students have voted to have our next class store right before Spring Break. Any items you may donate for class store would be greatly appreciated. J -Fifth Grade Ice Cream Sundae Party: The fifth grade will have their grade level ice cream sundae party on Wednesday, March 28 at 12:25. If you noted earlier in the year that you were interested in donating materials for class events, I’ve jotted at the bottom of this newsletter the item we would like for you to send for our party. Please send the item with your child by Wednesday, March 28 or bring it when you come. If you’d like to help with the serving/clean up of our sundae party, please arrive to the school around 12:10 pm on March 28. We will be serving in the cafeteria as students are dismissed from lunch. -Treat Bags: We are also planning to send home treat bags. If you are able, please send in a bag of candy or other small items for the treat bags. We will divide up what we receive equally between the students. Please send in the treat bag items or money donation to purchase items by Friday, March 23. -Need Some Parent Volunteers: On Monday, March 26 from 11:20-12:00, students will be sewing to create quilt squares as a part of their journey to experience the life of a pioneer. If you are able to help thread needles and untangle knots, it will be greatly appreciated! Looking Ahead: -March 20: Spring Pictures -March 27: Fundraiser Cookie Dough Delivery Date -March 28: End of Third Nine Weeks -March 29: Beginning of Spring Break If you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to contact me. You may jot a note in your child’s planner (just remind your child to show me!), call (704-736-1504), or send an email ([email protected]). Have an amazing week! Mrs. Melissa Park Gabby participated in a 5K on March 4th. It was the Stand Firm Warrior Foundation in memory of BJ Correll in Denver. Gabby bettered her time from the last race by four minutes. She also won first place in her age group. Gabby placed 42nd out of 160 people and was 18th out of 105 females, including adults! We're so proud of you, Gabby!
We are so proud of Grant! Grant and our PCIS Elementary Battle of the Books placed first in the Lincoln County Schools competition on Friday, March 9. Way to go!

In science, students will look more closely at transport and sensory systems. We will be doing experiments for both from the fifth grade FOSS kits. Remember, if you or someone in your family works in the medical field or as a First Responder, I’d love to have guest speakers for the class. In social studies, students will be purchasing supplies for their covered wagons as we prepare to travel west in our Westward Expansion simulation. Ask your child about his/her pioneer role! Reminders: -Body System Notes: Start studying! We will finish up our explorations on body systems. Then we will have a test on unicellular/multicellular organisms, cells/tissues/organs/systems, and how body systems work together. Encourage your child to bring his/her science notebook home every evening to start rereading over the notes. -Class Store: Students have voted to have our next class store right before Spring Break. Any items you may donate for class store would be greatly appreciated. -Middle School Registration: Information on how to register was sent home with your child’s last progress report. If you need assistance, just let me know. -PowerSchool: PowerSchool was down for maintenance this weekend. I have the papers graded and entered in my gradebook. I will get them entered online so you can view them on Monday evening. -Need Some Parent Volunteers: On Friday, from 11:20-12:00 and 12:30-1:00, students will be “shopping” to purchase items for their covered wagon. There is a lot of math involved as students add up how much money they have spent on their items and the weight of the items in their wagon. I’ll provide a calculator and pen! We’d appreciate extra adult help in checking off students’ math. Looking Ahead: -March 13: Shamrock Shuffle from 2:40-4:00 -March 14: Fifth Grade Field Trip to Schiele Museum -March 20: Spring Pictures -March 27: Fundraiser Cookie Dough Delivery Date -March 28: End of Third Nine Weeks -March 29: Beginning of Spring Break If you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to contact me. We will also look more closely at nutrient systems and transport systems at the end of the week.. In social studies, students will be starting our unit on Westward Expansion. It is a favorite of students in past years! Students will be taking on the roles of pioneers in a class simulation that is similar to the Oregon Trail game that we played as kids.
