Welcome back! I hope you had a wonderful break with your families. We are ready to hop back into learning for the new year! Students will be brushing on up fraction basics and math vocabulary from the first half of the year. Students will be using augmented reality (a tech experience I’m very excited about and sure the kids will be too!) to create an interactive math word wall in the classroom.
Homework for This Week, due on Friday, January 4
Fraction and Decimal Math Homework-It’s important to me that students see the connection between what we are working on in math class to the “real world.” Since we’ll be continuing our work with fractions and beginning our introduction with decimals over the next few weeks, I’d like for students to look for examples of how fractions and decimals are used every day. For homework this week, students will create a list on notebook paper of five specific ways they noticed fractions and decimals being used. I noticed over the course of a day that I used decimals when comparing prices in the grocery store and ads on television. I used fractions when cooking our evening meal. Feel free to share receipts with your child from shopping and have him/her look to see how the total price was calculated or other daily connections you have noticed as well. Students could even cut out examples from the weekly sales papers and coupons that arrive in our mailbox each week.
If you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to contact me. You may jot a note in your child’s planner (just remind your child to show me!), call (704-736-1504), or send an email ([email protected]). Have a terrific week! Mrs. Melissa Park
