Destiny and Zoey sold lemonade to raise funds for PCIS! Way to kick off our fundraiser. I will get ready for my Truth or Dare game. Do you think I will have to kiss a goat?

Dear Parents,
We will be exploring chemical and physical changes in matter this week. At the end of the week, be sure to ask your child about our science stations we explored outside. Upcoming Events
Dear Parents,
We will continue our exploration of order of operations and matching numerical expressions to word problems. Students will also be looking at volume. Be sure to ask your child about their exploration of volume with sugar cubes at the end of the week! Homework for the Week of September 30—due on FRIDAY **Your child has a missing work list stapled to this newsletter. It must be signed and returned to class tomorrow so I can make sure you are aware of your child’s missing work. You have access to your child’s up to date grades in PowerSchool. If you or your child need help logging in, please just let me know. -Mighty Mathematicians: Remember the expectations for the math journal responses. Students should clearly show their thinking, including the mistakes or things they tried along the way to figuring it out. I’m also encouraging them to read carefully. Most bags include some reflection questions for the students to include in their journal responses. Keep checking our class website at www.mrsparkfifthgrade.weebly.com. Our weekly newsletter is also posted on the blog each week. If you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to contact me. You may jot a note in your child’s planner (just remind your child to show me!), call (704-736-1504), or send an email ([email protected]). Have a terrific week! Mrs. Melissa Park Dear Parents,
In reading, we will use the comprehension skill of compare/contrast as we discuss the New England, Middle, and Southern colonies and characters in our current book clubs. Our first class store was a huge success! I send a very special thank you to all families who donated items to make our “shopping experience” fun! Students will continue their exploration of matter this week.! We’ll be doing some experiments with conservation of mass and chemical/physical properties of matter.

Homework for the Week of September 23—due on FRIDAY I need your help with homework! We still have some missing Mighty Mathematicians math homework bags that need to be returned. A lot of students are not returning their homework when it is due on Friday. Students who turn their homework in on time are rewarded with tickets. Students who have missing class work and missing/late homework will have a lower grade on the “study and work habits” section of the next progress report and report card. So in an attempt to solve this problem, I’m sending home “worksheet” homework for one week. This will hopefully give everyone one more chance to get their math bags returned to my classroom so I have enough bags to check out to the other students. There is also a place for you and your child to check and sign on the second page. I want to make sure you are receiving this newsletter and have noticed your child doing math homework each week. I’m truly trying to figure out why we have so many missing homework assignments! I want to work with you to help your child develop strong routines that will help them be successful this year and in middle school. In reading, we will use our strategies to identify main ideas and details as we learn about the New England, Middle, and Southern regions of the Thirteen Colonies. We will be using our main idea and detail notes to create a summary. In our summary, we will focus on using correct capitalization, punctuation, and spelling.
Homework for the Week of September 23
Dear Parents,
Students will begin their exploration of matter this week. We’ll look at the states of matter and how molecules behave in these different states. Be sure to ask the students about our “I’m a gas”, “I’m a liquid”, and “I’m a solid” movement activity at the end of the week! We’ll be doing some experiments with how heat impacts matter and conservation of mass. Upcoming Events.

Students will be sharing the virtual reality museums they created on their explorers this week. We’ll be looking at the relationships between the explorers and the events in their lives. We’ll also be extending this into our book club discussions. What relationships do students notice between the characters and between the events of the story as they unfold?
