Hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving holiday with their families! In our homeroom class, we’ll be making observations on the interdependence of abiotic factors and biotic factors in our terrariums and aquariums. Thanks to all families who have sent in supplies for our ecosystems project and those who have volunteered as students excitedly created their bottle ecosystems! The students are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our “critters” this week. In social studies, students are continuing their work on the colonial kid letters and illustrations.
We will have a quiz on the ecosystems vocabulary covered so far during the middle of next week. I’ll send the exact date after I’ve adjusted plans based on how long it takes to add our “critters” to our ecosystems this week. J Encourage your child to bring their science notebooks home each evening. Just remind him/her to return it each day! Students should be familiar with ecosystem, abiotic factor, biotic factor, consumer, producer, decomposer, scavenger, herbivore, carnivore, omnivore, food chain.
Upcoming Events:
-Colonial Christmas: Looking ahead, on December 20, we will be having our holiday party in the afternoon. I would like to make it a day of fun and learning. I’m looking into activities for a Colonial Christmas to help students experience history in the classroom. It would be very helpful to have extra adult hands in the classroom that day. If you are able to send materials for the Colonial Christmas and holiday party, that would be helpful as well. Please complete and return the slip below by Friday, December 1.This will help me in planning for the special day.
-Virtual Reality Grant Update: Earlier this fall, I received a 500 dollar grant from EdCamp, sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. After doing some problem solving (that I’m sure I’ll be doing more of in the future!), I was able to determine our needs for the classroom and stretch the dollars during the Black Friday sales. The items should be shipping soon. My goal is for the students to engage in some virtual field trips using Google Expeditions in late December/early January. By mid-January, I hope to have the students jumping into creating virtual reality content. I’m excited, as always! J
-Progress Reports: These will be sent home on December 4.
-PTO Musical Program: This will be at 6:00pm on December 5.
-McDonalds Night: Come support PCIS on December 7 at the Boger City location!
-No School: Our winter holiday break will be from December 21-January 2.
-PTO Lollipops: Students may bring $1 to purchase lollipops in class. All proceeds benefit PTO.
As always, if you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected] or 704-736-1504. Keep checking our class website at www.mrsparkfifthgrade.weebly.com. Have an amazing week!
